What do I need on my end?

You will need the following equipment at your location to access the Internet using our ADSL service.

  • An Internet suitable computer

    • An IBM compatible personal computer:

80486 processor at 66Mhz or faster. A slower computer will work, but it cannot take full advantage of the high speed of ADSL.

Windows 95, 98, NT, Unix, or other suitable operating environment.

    • An Apple Macintosh personal computer

      68030 processor or better.

      Apple O.S. 7.0 or higher.

  • A network interface card (NIC). The NIC must accept a 10/100 Base-T Ethernet connection to an external ADSL modem. It is possible to use an ATM network interface card, a USB serial port, or an internal ADSL modem card. Check with the Internet Connection for the availability and suitability of any method other than an Ethernet 10/100 Base-T connection.

  • An ADSL Modem. This unit converts the ADSL signal that arrives over your telephone line, into an Ethernet 10/100 Base-T signal for delivery to your computer. For an Ethernet we recommend the Alcatel modem part number 3EC18202, and for ATM the model is 3EC18200. Other devices may function in an acceptable fashion, but at present there is not enough experience to say a particular device will function properly.

  • A POTS Splitter. This device splits the signal from the telephone line into two components. One component is the usual voice signal, the other component is the high speed data signal. The voice signal is sent to your telephone system, and the high speed data signal is passed to your Alcatel modem.

Before you go out and buy any new equipment, please remember that a network interface card, an ADSL modem, and POTS splitter is included in the installation of the ADSL service by your telephone provider.

All you need to have is a suitable computer system.

If you desire to network several computers at one location, and provide Internet to each computer over the network, please remember that you will need additional equipment. You will need:

  • A suitable router to route the signals to correct device on your network. The router can also provide address translation functions, a firewall, DNS, and other services.
  • A network hub. A hub will permit you connect multiple devices to your network.
  • A suitable service plan from the Internet Connection. The plan you choose should provide for a sufficient quantity of IP addresses for the number of devices that you care to use on your network.
